Chasing Five Stars: How CMS Scores Quality—and How You Can Improve
- Explain the key components of the CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System and how each domain impacts the overall rating.
- Identify recent CMS updates and understand their implications for facility Five-Star performance.
- Describe quality measure changes and their direct influence on staffing and overall star ratings.
- Apply practical strategies to strengthen Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs in support of regulatory compliance and quality improvement.
The CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the system’s core components, including health inspections, staffing, and quality measures, and explains how each contributes to a facility’s overall rating. Participants will gain insight into recent CMS updates to the health inspection domain as well as changes to quality measures. The session will also highlight practical, data-driven strategies to strengthen compliance efforts, improve quality scores, and align Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs with current regulatory expectations. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how to proactively manage and sustain Five-Star performance in an evolving regulatory environment.

IQIES: What Does It Even Stand for and How Can I Use It?
- A brief overview of the IQIES system and how to gain access
- Utilize IQIES reports and dashboards to manage the MDS process
- Identify Quality Reports to improve quality measures
- Obtain Provider Reports to prepare for the LTC survey process
In this presentation, we will explore the Internet Quality Improvement & Evaluation System (IQIES), a powerful tool developed by CMS to enhance data collection and reporting processes for healthcare providers. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of IQIES, including how to gain access and leverage its capabilities to manage the Minimum Data Set (MDS) process more effectively. Attendees will learn how to utilize IQIES reports and dashboards to monitor quality measures, identify areas for improvement, and access essential provider reports in preparation for the Long-Term Care (LTC) survey process. By the end of this session, participants will have a clearer understanding of how to use IQIES to improve the quality of care and stay compliant with CMS requirements.
